Twitter Pinyin Tone Marks Search Test Results

The following results are from tests run on March 22, 2012. Some of the things they seem to show are:

  • Vowels with 1st ( ¯ ) and 3rd ( ˇ ) tone marks are not as well supported as those with 2nd ( ´ ) and 4th ( ` ) tone marks, probably because the latter are more frequently used in other languages like French, etc. as accent marks.
    • Uppercase vowels with 1st ( ¯ ) tone marks may not be supported at all.
  • To find occurrences of “ü” and its variants with pinyin tone marks, one must use search terms with matching diacritic marks. Matching upper- or lowercase is not required, though.
  • If you want to have the benefits of including words with pinyin tone marks in your tweet, but you also want as many people as possible to find it through Twitter’s search function, then for now (until Twitter changes the way its search function works) it may be best to repeat your key words that contain pinyin tone marks as hashtagged keywords that do not contain pinyin tone marks. E.g., include “#nihao” in addition to “nǐhǎo”.
